Bad transfers almost always come down to three variables: temperature, dwell time, and
pressure. Get one wrong and the design peels, scorches, or ghosts. The ranges below are common
starting points. The transfer manufacturer’s instructions always win when they differ.
Why the chart is only a starting point
The number on your press display is the temperature at the sensor, not the temperature across
the platen. Cheaper presses can run 20°F or more cooler at the edges than at the center. Pressure
dials are rarely calibrated to a real unit, so “medium” on one machine is “firm” on another. Treat
every setting as a hypothesis until you test it on your press with your material.

Common starting settings by transfer type
- Standard heat transfer vinyl (HTV) on cotton or poly-cotton: roughly
305 to 320°F, 10 to 15 seconds, medium pressure. Peel hot or cold as the vinyl specifies. - Glitter and specialty HTV: often slightly hotter or longer than standard
vinyl. Check the roll’s label. - Sublimation on polyester fabric: roughly 385 to 400°F, 40 to 60 seconds,
light to medium pressure. - Sublimation on hard goods (tiles, metal panels): around 400°F with longer
times, often 60 to 90 seconds or more depending on thickness. - DTF (direct-to-film) transfers: commonly 300 to 325°F, 10 to 15 seconds,
medium to firm pressure, then a short second press after peeling. - Plastisol screen-printed transfers: often 325 to 375°F with firm pressure.
These vary more by manufacturer than any other type.
Testing temperature properly
Heat-sensitive temperature strips or a surface probe thermometer will show you what the platen
is actually doing. Check the center and all four corners after the press has fully warmed up.
If the corners read well below the center, keep designs toward the middle of the platen or add a
few seconds of dwell time.
Testing pressure with the paper method
Place a sheet of paper at each edge of the lower platen and close the press at your working
pressure. Try to pull each sheet out. If one edge slides out easily while the others hold, the
pressure is uneven. Adjust the press or add a pressing pillow to level it out.
Symptoms and fixes
- Vinyl lifts after washing: too little pressure or time, or the garment was
washed too soon. - Scorch marks or yellowing: temperature too high for the fabric. Lower the
heat and use a Teflon sheet or parchment cover. - Faded or blurry sublimation: too little time, or the fabric has too little
polyester in it. - Shiny platen marks (press box): too much pressure. Use a pressing pillow and
back off the pressure.
Frequently asked questions
Should I preheat the garment?
Yes. A 3 to 5 second press removes moisture and wrinkles. Trapped moisture is a leading cause of
poor adhesion.
Can I use one setting for everything?
No. HTV, sublimation, and DTF use different adhesion or dye-transfer processes and need
different settings. Keep a written settings log for each material you stock.
Does altitude or humidity change settings?
Humidity matters more than altitude. In damp conditions, lengthen the pre-press so the fabric is
dry before the transfer goes on.
