Every flat heat press does the same basic job: hold a heated platen against a garment at a set
temperature, pressure, and time. How the upper platen opens is what separates the three main
styles, and that one mechanical choice affects how fast you work, how much bench space you need,
and how often you burn your forearm.
Clamshell presses: fast and compact
A clamshell press hinges at the back and opens like a book. The upper platen lifts at an angle,
so it needs almost no room beyond its own footprint. That makes it the default choice for small
shops, craft rooms, and event printing where table space is tight.
Clamshells are quick. Open, lay the garment, close, done. For high-volume jobs with thin
materials, such as heat transfer vinyl on cotton tees, few styles are faster. The trade-off is that
the hinge geometry applies pressure unevenly on thick items. The back edge closes first, so a thick
hoodie or a padded item can end up with lighter pressure at the front of the platen.
The other drawback is the heat source sitting above your hands while you position the garment.
Operators learn to work quickly, but it is still a burn risk.

Swing-away presses: even pressure and a clear workspace
A swing-away press lifts the upper platen straight up and then rotates it to the side. The heat
moves completely off the work area, so you can lay out garments, align transfers, and add
multi-layer designs without a hot plate over your hands.
Because the platen comes straight down, pressure is even across the whole surface. That matters
for thick substrates like plaques, tiles, slate, and heavy sweatshirts. The costs are floor space,
since the platen needs clearance to swing, and a slightly slower cycle per piece.
Draw presses: the middle ground
A draw press, sometimes called a pull-out press, keeps the upper platen fixed and slides the
lower platen toward you like a drawer. You get the heat-free work area of a swing-away with a
footprint closer to a clamshell, because nothing swings sideways. You do need clearance in front of
the machine.
Draw presses pair well with interchangeable lower platens, which makes them popular for shops
that press sleeves, pockets, and youth sizes alongside standard shirt fronts.
How to choose
- Mostly thin garments, limited space, speed matters: clamshell.
- Thick or rigid items, multi-step layering, safety first: swing-away.
- Mixed work with swappable platens and moderate space: draw.
