Choosing a Heat Press for Sublimation: Heat Evenness Matters Most

Sublimation turns dye into gas and bonds it into polyester or a polymer coating. Unlike vinyl,
nothing sits on top of the material. The image becomes part of it. That process is far less
forgiving of cold spots, so the heat press you use matters more for sublimation than for almost any
other decoration method.

Why sublimation is harder on a press

Sublimation typically runs near 385 to 400°F, the upper end of what most presses are built for.
At that temperature, any weakness in the heating element layout shows up as a faded patch. A vinyl
job may tolerate a platen that runs 15°F cool at one corner. A sublimation print will show that
corner as a washed-out area.

Features worth paying for

  • Even heat distribution: heating elements spaced closely across the whole
    platen, ideally backed by a thick aluminum platen that spreads heat.
  • Accurate digital temperature control: a stable readout that recovers quickly
    after the press opens.
  • Adjustable pressure for thick items: enough range to press tiles, slate, and
    panels without cranking the adjustment to its limit.
  • Swing-away or draw design: even vertical pressure on rigid substrates.
  • Platen size that fits your products: sublimation designs often run edge to
    edge, so a 16×20 platen is a common upgrade from 15×15.

Blanks and materials

Sublimation only works on polyester fabric or on items with a polyester coating. Cotton does not
hold the dye. A 100% polyester white or light-colored shirt gives the brightest result. Blends work,
but the image fades in proportion to the cotton content. Mugs, tiles, metal panels, and mouse pads
need a sublimation-specific coating.

Common problems

  • Ghosting (a doubled image): the transfer paper shifted when the press opened.
    Use heat-resistant tape and open the press smoothly.
  • Press box marks: too much pressure. Use a foam pillow or reduce the
    pressure.
  • Dye bleeding through to the upper platen: always use protective paper above
    and below the item.
  • Dull colors: not enough time or heat, a low-polyester blank, or incorrect
    printer color profiles.

Can I use a craft iron-style press for sublimation?

Small handheld presses work for small shirt designs, but even heat over larger areas is
difficult. For hard goods and full-front prints, use a flat press.

Do I need a separate press for mugs?

Mugs need a mug press or a convection oven with wraps. A flat press cannot wrap heat around a
cylinder.

Why do my prints look different after the first wash?

Properly sublimated prints do not wash out. If colors fade quickly, the dye did not fully
sublimate. Increase time or temperature.
